Without routine exams and cleanings, the vast majority of companion animals experience some degree of periodontal disease by the time they reach three years of age. In its early stages, disease affecting the teeth and gums often causes bad breath, tooth discoloration, and discomfort. As the disease progresses, it may lead to difficulty eating, tooth loss, and pain.

When left untreated for an extended period, infections originating in the mouth can enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body, potentially causing organ damage. Sadly, untreated periodontal disease is one of the leading causes of premature death in companion animals.
