If your pet is free from external parasites but spends most of their day scratching or chewing, an underlying allergy is the most common culprit. Companion animals are allergic to many of the same things as humans, including dust mites, pollen, mold, and ragweed. While those allergens might make you cough or sneeze or give you watery eyes, though, they are more likely to cause itchy skin in your pet. Food allergies also cause itchiness in pets. Your precious pet could be allergic to corn, wheat, soy, or chicken or beef byproducts. In these instances, allergy testing and treatment are the only ways to provide long-term relief.

Skin conditions like mange and ringworm can cause itchy skin, too. And if your pet scratches or bites at their skin excessively, they may develop secondary bacterial infections.
